J. Toscano
Partner
J. Toscano is a partner at GMMB, conducting his communications work at the intersection of policy, issues and politics. He joined the firm in 1997.
J.’s political obsession stretches back to childhood afternoons spent alphabetizing campaign mail for local political candidates. As an adult, J. fulfilled his childhood dream of working in the U.S. House of Representatives, serving under current Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) as communications director for the Democratic Caucus. He then joined the Clinton administration as public affairs director for the president’s signature national service program, AmeriCorps.
At GMMB, J. deepened his political skills as a media consultant for Governor Jim Doyle (D-Wis.), U.S. Senator Max Baucus (D-Mont.), U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.), Donna Edwards’ (D-MD/4) congressional campaign, and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. His special talents lie in developing sharp message strategy, turning words and ideas into moving speeches, and creating spots that often tiptoe out of traditional political bounds to engage increasingly cynical audiences.
In the issues arena, J. brings together traditional and guerilla public relations, viral marketing, and paid media into integrated campaigns that change minds and behaviors. Clients include the Save Darfur Coalition, Credit Union National Association, Mott Foundation, and several nonprofit health care associations. He has also served as a strategic communications advisor to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Fannie Mae Foundation and Americans United, an advocacy group.
