Oxfam America Tells Oil Companies to Stop Fighting Transparency
Posted on Feb 15, 2012
Energy companies have always paid government officials in resource-rich countries for access to oil, natural gas and minerals. That’s how their business is done. But because those payments are usually kept secret, impoverished communities remain unaware of the revenues while corrupt government officials grow wealthy.
In 2010, Congress passed a rule (provision 1504) requiring companies to disclose those payments to host governments. It’s now up to the US SEC to implement that final rule – a rule that oil companies are threatening to block with lawsuits.
Enter Oxfam America and a diverse group of advocacy partners. They recently launched a public awareness campaign urging the SEC to implement the final rule, and tell companies to stop fighting transparency.
GMMB helped Oxfam develop eye-catching print and digital ads designed to raise this below-the-radar issue into the public debate. And the media is taking notice. Visit Oxfam for more information about the campaign.
