GMMB Welcomes Jaime Zapata

Posted on Nov 14, 2011

After recently joining the firm, Jaime Alfonso Zapata is leading work with the James B. Hunt, Jr. Institute for Educational Leadership and Policy and the National Coalition for College Completion. He is also helping to lead GMMB’s work on behalf of Teaching Channel and Latino political candidates. Zapata brings nearly two decades of strategic communications experience to GMMB. Most recently, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary and Senior Managing Director of Public Affairs for U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. Zapata helped revamp the communications structure of the federal agency—with an emphasis on measurable results and creating efficiencies across the Department of Labor’s various divisions.

Previously, he worked in the U.S. House of Representatives as the first Hispanic reading clerk in the history of Congress and as Communications Director for the House Committee on Small Business. During the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Boston, Zapata worked as a TV network liaison. Zapata has also worked at the American Federation of Teachers and at the National Association for Bilingual Education. He holds a Master’s degree from The George Washington University’s School of Media and Public Affairs, where his studies focused largely on the intersection of media, policy and political campaigns.

Zapata says of his move, “GMMB’s successful track record bringing multiple stakeholders together to solve critical national problems, coupled with the firm’s focus on results, is what brought me here. I look forward to sharing my experience in the realm of education, policy and communications, with GMMB and its clients.”
