CNCS Leads MLK Day of Service

Posted on Jan 20, 2012

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'”. This is the spirit that drives the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service and GMMB’s work with the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) to shine a spotlight on service as a powerful force to bridge economic and social divides, on the King holiday and throughout the year.

This past Monday, January 16, Americans from every state honored the life and legacy of Dr. King by participating in more than 1,000 service projects in their communities, many of which were designed to advance Dr. King’s dream of economic opportunity. Service projects included providing job training and mentoring to unemployed workers, refurbishing schools and community centers, collecting food and clothing, signing up mentors, supporting veterans and military families, and promoting nonviolence, with many projects starting on King Day and lasting throughout the year.

GMMB helped amplify coverage of the King Holiday, including national online placements, print, radio and TV. We’re proud of our ongoing work and history with CNCS, which dates back to the launch of AmeriCorps in 1993.

Through AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, the Social Innovation Fund and other programs, CNCS and the organizations and volunteers it supports are helping families find permanent housing, providing financial education and job readiness supports, and mentoring students so they can succeed in school and life. Along with putting individuals and families on the pathway to economic opportunity, national service connects volunteers of all ages with hands-on opportunities to supplement their skills and new entryways to the workforce.

Congratulations to CNCS, its grantees and partners for a successful MLK Day of Service!
